In 2018, Bónus was the first supermarket in Iceland to stop selling plastic grocery bags, saving the environment 200 tons of plastic. For a small fee we sell biodegradable grocery bags which is certified compostable. Furthermore, we have sold and given away over 400 thousand reusable bags to customers.

Greener Bónus

Bónus really cares for the environment and has taken many positive steps towards a greener future.

Carbon neutral

Bónus became the first supermarket in Iceland to become carbon neutral. We planted 6,670 trees in cooperation with the Icelandic Carbon Fund, to offset our greenhouse emission from all of our store operations for the year 2018.

Recycling is key

Less garbage and more recycling. 1,955 tons of corrugated paper was recycled in 2018. 4.1% less waste than previous year and 9.4% more recycling.

Fighting food waste

Bónus is always looking at new ways to reduce waste. Our customers have helped us in that effort over the past 30 years with buying products that may have a few blemishes. Also we give special discounts on products that are set to expire.

Led & Green Tech

Bónus has switched to LED technology for indoor lighting in most stores and new stores are added to the list each passing month. New and improved green cooling technology has also been implemented in our updated and new stores.

Product Selection

Bónus offers environmentally friendly options when it comes to single use items like biodegradable plates and utensils. The product selection also includes bamboo toothbrushes, reusable cleaning pads for the skin, steel straws, and green cleaning products.
